Hospice Care

Approaching the End of Life with Dignity and Comfort

With advances in medicine prolonging our lifespans, more and more seniors in greater Phoenix, and around the U.S., are passing away in hospitals or nursing homes, environments that may not be consistent with their wishes. Of course, we often do not have the luxury of deciding where and how we pass away; however, if given the choice, most people would instead prefer to die peacefully and comfortably at home, surrounded by their family and friends. With hospice services, Phoenix seniors and their caregivers can approach end-of-life care with dignity and peace.

What is Hospice Care?

Hospice is a form of care for people with terminal illnesses that focuses on making them as comfortable as possible and supporting their loved ones during this difficult time. Hospice care in the Phoenix metropolitan area can take place at home or in inpatient settings such as a hospice facility, hospital, or nursing home. In inpatient settings, hospice is provided by a team of medical professionals such as doctors, nurses, social workers, and chaplains. In the home, day-to-day hospice care is delivered by family or friends, with guidance or respite support from visiting healthcare professionals that are available at any time. Regardless of the setting, hospice care provides for the medical, emotional, and spiritual support of the person who is dying and their loved ones.

Common questions

Questions families ask about hospice care

What is hospice care?
Hospice is care for people with terminal illnesses that focuses on keeping them as comfortable as possible while supporting the people who love them. It provides for the medical, emotional, and spiritual needs of the person who is dying and their family. Hospice does not try to cure the illness. It tries to make the time that remains peaceful and dignified.
Can hospice care happen at home?
Yes, and many families in the Phoenix metropolitan area choose that. At home, day to day hospice is delivered by family or friends, with guidance and respite support from visiting healthcare professionals who are available at any time. Hospice can also take place in an inpatient setting such as a hospice facility, hospital, or nursing home, where a team of doctors, nurses, social workers, and chaplains provides it.
How do I choose a hospice provider in Phoenix?
Start by talking to someone who has done it many times. We have coordinated inpatient and in home hospice in Phoenix, Mesa, Scottsdale, and beyond. David, our placement specialist, understands how hard this stretch is for your family and will help you find care that fits your loved one's wishes rather than whatever provider happens to be suggested at the hospital.
Can a social worker help our family with hospice paperwork and benefits?
Yes. Our care team includes a licensed social worker (LMSW), at no cost to you. She coordinates with Medicare, hospice, and home health services, reviews eligibility for ALTCS and VA benefits including Aid and Attendance, and connects families to community resources and caregiver support. She also helps with the emotional side of this transition, which matters as much as the forms.
Why do so many seniors die in hospitals instead of at home?
Because medicine now prolongs life, more seniors in greater Phoenix and around the country are passing away in hospitals or nursing homes, settings that may not match their wishes. We do not always get to choose where and how we die. Still, most people would prefer to go peacefully at home among family and friends, and hospice makes that far more achievable.

What families say

David P was amazing. He dove head in my difficult situation with a sister who is just 68 with dementia and in full denial. He was kind and warm while she was rude and stoic. He even repeated a tour after she could not remember going. He even went to visit her to check on her with his warmth and kindness. I am very lucky that Barrow's recommended him.

Integrity Senior Placement is outstanding! David and Reina consistently go above and beyond, placing residents in my assisted living home with great care and thoughtfulness. What truly sets them apart is their follow-up to ensure both the client and their family are well cared for. A true partner in senior care!

We were fortunate to receive a referral to Integrity Senior Placement to help us find assisted living for Mom. Thanks to Reina and David's guidance and support, the perfect place was found. Integrity listened to our family's needs and wants and arranged visits to assisted living places. There was never any pressure, only compassion. It was comforting to know we didn't have to go through this process alone. Once settled in her new home, Integrity followed up with phone calls and a home visit to Mom to make sure she was doing well and happy with her new place. Integrity truly lives up to their name and reputation. We are so thankful Integrity was on our side.

David helped me find an assisted living group home on short notice for my uncle who was in a SNF for rehab. He made himself available to show some homes so quickly and was very kind to us. He explained the process to my uncle and everything worked out very well.

We are here to help.

As your loved one ages and requires special care, it can be hard to know who to turn to. Integrity Senior Placement is here to guide you every step of the way.

What people are saying

Integrity Placement exceeded our expectations. We called with an urgent need to relocate our 88 year old mother with advanced Parkinson's disease, dementia, rheumatoid arthritis, and a heart condition to a safe, capable and conducive environment. Having changed ownership and management, her then current facility had dramatically declined, replaced administration with unethical leadership, and become an elder-care warehouse. David listened to our list of needs, our experiences, and our hopes. Within a week Integrity Placement had researched potential fits, contacted AND prepared several to address our needs, guided us through on-site reviews, and helped us walk through the decision process. Every alternative we visited was exceptional and prepared to address our specific financial and medical needs. We found a match a could not be happier or more relieved.

David is amazing to work with. He made a huge difference in a very difficult time for our family. We were amazed at his efficiency in finding options for care homes and couldn't have found such a wonderful option without his guidance. But most of all, his kindness and warmth was everything to us. We will remain forever grateful.

Reina is truly our guardian angel. Fortunately, she was referred to me to help find a placement for my brother who was being discharged from a north Scottsdale facility at a moments notice. Having to deal with a facility and insurance who don't have your loved ones best interest at heart is maddening. I was panicked. Reina calmed my fears and was instrumental in finding a wonderful placement for Joe. She stayed connected with me during the entire process and continues to be a part of our lives. I appreciate her and the value of Integrity Placement and know this transition went as smoothly as it did because of Reina. Her dedication to her clients and families, her knowledge, honesty, patience, and professionalism are truly incredible. I can't thank Reina enough for how much she helped our family.
