Assisted living in Glendale, AZ

Most families searching for assisted living in Glendale are not browsing. They are standing in a hallway at Banner Thunderbird, or sitting at a kitchen table in Arrowhead after a fall, while a discharge planner asks where your loved one is going on Friday. It is a bad week to be learning a new vocabulary, and it is usually the week the search starts.

The first thing worth knowing is that Glendale has a great deal of assisted living, and that it comes in two shapes that share a name. Most of it is small. The state's published extract lists 128 licensed assisted living homes at Glendale addresses, ordinary houses on ordinary streets, most of them licensed for five or ten residents. Alongside them sit twelve assisted living centers, the larger campuses people picture when they hear the words. Both are licensed by the state of Arizona. Both can be right for a family. They are not the same decision, because the number of residents is what changes the days.

What the search actually needs is someone who already knows these places from the inside. We start with a free personal assessment, in the home, so the level of care is matched the first time rather than guessed at. Then we narrow the field to the Glendale settings that fit the care, the budget, and a visiting routine your family can keep up. We tour with you, ask the questions families do not think to ask, and negotiate the price so your resources go further. Our help is free to your family and carries no obligation. We are compensated through contracts we hold with the communities we work with, and the price we negotiate does not change what you pay.

Licensed supply

The Arizona Department of Health Services publishes an extract of every state licensed residential facility in Arizona. Its most recent published snapshot lists 140 active assisted living licenses at Glendale addresses, 128 homes and 12 centers. Between them they hold roughly 2,100 licensed beds, and that total is split more evenly than the counts suggest. The 128 homes account for about 1,000 of those beds. The twelve centers account for about 1,100, and they range in size from around twenty residents to around two hundred. Arizona draws the line at eleven. An assisted living home is licensed to provide resident rooms to ten or fewer residents, and a center to eleven or more.

The supply is not spread evenly across the city. Of the 140 Glendale addresses in that extract, 100 sit north of Thunderbird Road, and only about fifteen sit south of Northern Avenue. If your family is in the older neighborhoods near Old Towne, that is worth knowing before you start, because a search drawn tightly around the house will come back thin while a search drawn a little wider will not. It also means a Glendale family rarely has to leave the city for lack of choice.

Hospitals and timing

Glendale's hospitals include Banner Thunderbird, Abrazo Arrowhead and St. Joseph's Westgate, and a Glendale family may also end up north of the city. Banner Thunderbird Medical Center on West Thunderbird Road is a Level I Adult Trauma Center for patients 15 and older, which Banner says greatly reduces the need to transfer patients outside the area for life saving treatment. Abrazo Arrowhead Campus on North 67th Avenue is an acute care teaching hospital known for its cardiovascular and neurosciences work. Banner Boswell Medical Center, in Sun City to the north, describes itself as a destination medical center specializing in the diseases of the elderly. Which one your loved one is in shapes the timing more than anything else, because a discharge plan can come together in a day. Medicare's skilled rehab coverage is time limited and was never built for long term care, so the question of where your loved one lives next often has to be answered while they are still in the bed. We answer right away, seven days a week, and we can often help within days and sometimes within hours.

Paying for it

Cost in Glendale turns on the level of care and the setting, not on the city line. Most communities charge a one time entrance fee that runs from $500 to $7,500, and total monthly fees in assisted living commonly fall between $2,500 and $10,000. An assisted living group home with a semi private room starts around $2,000 a month and can reach $10,000, with a deposit of $500 to $2,500. Those are the ranges we publish, and we will not quote you a Glendale average, because there is not an honest one to quote. Before you decide the numbers do not work, let us check what your family may qualify for. ALTCS is Arizona's Medicaid long term care program, run by AHCCCS, and it can pay for care in assisted living rather than only in a nursing home. VA Aid and Attendance is a monthly benefit for a wartime veteran or a surviving spouse who needs help with daily activities, and it can go toward assisted living. A licensed social worker (LMSW) on our care team reviews both with you at no cost, and we negotiate the rate on your behalf.

Common questions

Questions families ask about assisted living in Glendale

The hospital in Glendale says my mother cannot go home. Is assisted living the same as a nursing home?
No. Arizona licenses the two separately, through two different state programs, and they are different settings. Assisted living in Glendale is residential care, approved at one of three service levels: supervisory care, personal care, or directed care. A nursing care institution is licensed to provide skilled nursing on site. Ask her discharge planner which level of care her doctor ordered, then tell us the answer and we will search against it.
We live near Old Towne Glendale. Is there assisted living in that part of the city?
Some, and most of it is further north. The state's published extract lists 140 licensed assisted living addresses in Glendale, and 100 of them sit north of Thunderbird Road, with only about fifteen south of Northern Avenue. That does not mean your loved one has to move across the city. It does mean a search drawn tightly around the old neighborhoods will feel thin, so we show you what is genuinely close first and then widen it with you.
Can my parents move into assisted living in Glendale together?
Often yes, and it is worth raising before you tour anywhere. Arizona licenses an assisted living center to provide resident rooms or residential units, which is why some centers offer an apartment rather than a single room, and a small assisted living home may have a semi private room. Tell us at the assessment that they intend to stay together. We ask every place on your Glendale shortlist what a shared arrangement costs, before anyone falls in love with a room.
Is assisted living cheaper in Glendale than in Scottsdale or Phoenix?
There is no published Glendale price, and the city line matters less than families expect. What moves the monthly bill is the setting and the level of care your loved one needs. A semi private room in a small assisted living home starts around $2,000 a month, total monthly fees in assisted living commonly fall between $2,500 and $10,000, and most communities add a one time entrance fee of $500 to $7,500. We negotiate the rate for you at no cost.

What families say

We had a fantastic experience working with Integrity Senior Placement, especially with Troy. Being new to the process of finding assisted living, we felt overwhelmed at first, but Troy was incredibly helpful, communicative, and kind. He took the time to understand our needs, set up tours, and made sure we had answers to all our questions. His guidance made a stressful decision so much easier. Highly recommend working with them!

Reina McRae has helped my sister and I twice to find an assisted living group home for my parents. First, back in 2017 we had 3 days to find a place for my parents after my dad was released from a rehabilitation facility. Reina immediately showed us 3 group homes, one of which we chose. My dad passed away and my mom has been there since 2017, for 8 years. Due to recent circumstances, we chose to move my mom to a new group home. We called Reina again, this time on a Friday night. Reina went to work immediately and showed us 3 group homes on Monday, one of which we chose that afternoon. Reina goes above and beyond. She found what we needed immediately. Both situations started out very stressful for my sister and I. However, Reina put us at ease both times. Reina sincerely cared about us and worked hard to do what was best for my mom. Reina loves what she does and it shows. After working with Reina, we highly recommend her. As long as she is available, we would not use anyone else. Reina is sincere, trusting, pleasant and very nice to work with. Thank you Reina!

Integrity Senior Placement is outstanding! David and Reina consistently go above and beyond, placing residents in my assisted living home with great care and thoughtfulness. What truly sets them apart is their follow-up to ensure both the client and their family are well cared for. A true partner in senior care!

We had less than 48 hours to find a Care Home which would fit our Dad’s needs. Troy was intuitive, a good listener and provided us solid options. We are thankful for his quick & genuine expertise.

What people are saying

Integrity Placement exceeded our expectations. We called with an urgent need to relocate our 88 year old mother with advanced Parkinson's disease, dementia, rheumatoid arthritis, and a heart condition to a safe, capable and conducive environment. Having changed ownership and management, her then current facility had dramatically declined, replaced administration with unethical leadership, and become an elder-care warehouse. David listened to our list of needs, our experiences, and our hopes. Within a week Integrity Placement had researched potential fits, contacted AND prepared several to address our needs, guided us through on-site reviews, and helped us walk through the decision process. Every alternative we visited was exceptional and prepared to address our specific financial and medical needs. We found a match a could not be happier or more relieved.

David is amazing to work with. He made a huge difference in a very difficult time for our family. We were amazed at his efficiency in finding options for care homes and couldn't have found such a wonderful option without his guidance. But most of all, his kindness and warmth was everything to us. We will remain forever grateful.

Reina is truly our guardian angel. Fortunately, she was referred to me to help find a placement for my brother who was being discharged from a north Scottsdale facility at a moments notice. Having to deal with a facility and insurance who don't have your loved ones best interest at heart is maddening. I was panicked. Reina calmed my fears and was instrumental in finding a wonderful placement for Joe. She stayed connected with me during the entire process and continues to be a part of our lives. I appreciate her and the value of Integrity Placement and know this transition went as smoothly as it did because of Reina. Her dedication to her clients and families, her knowledge, honesty, patience, and professionalism are truly incredible. I can't thank Reina enough for how much she helped our family.
